Description
Commemorative Crown Coin - marking the death of Sir Winston Churchill in 1965. Reverse shows the late Queen Elizabeth II. Coin issued by UK Mint. Churchill was a REAL leader, who had his faults, but was 100 times better than the current crop of so-called leaders on both sides of the AtlanticThe crown is still legal tender, worth 25 pence, but these commemorative issues change hands for considerable amounts. Explanation of the crown, here....
The British crown, the successor to the English crown and the Scottish dollar, came into being with the Union of the kingdoms of England and Scotland in 1707. As with the English coin, its value was five shillings. Always a heavy silver coin weighing around one ounce, during the 19th and 20th centuries the crown declined from being a real means of exchange to being a coin rarely spent and minted for commemorative purposes only.
Coin itself looks in very good condition. This one has no case of it's own, but CAN be provided in a hard plastic case issued by the Trustee Savings Bank for OTHER commemorative crowns. I am listing separately other commemorative coins from Trustee Savings Bank for Charles and Diana's Wedding, and the Queen Mother's 80th birthday.
