    T
he House of Tudor Reigns Again
Buoyed by the monumental success of its Queen’s Beasts series, Great Britain’s Royal Mint has once again dug into its nation’s rich regal heraldry with a series dedicated to the famous Tudor dynasty. The kings and queens of the House of Tudor reigned in an era that saw England develop into one of Europe’s most powerful and influential states and a leader in the Renaissance movement. Now their heraldry reigns again on this fantastic and imaginative series that begins with a coin that features a beast dedicated to King Henry VIII’s third wife, Jane Seymour.
The Heraldic Beasts From The House Of Tudor
Known as the Seymour Panther, this beast stands guard along with nine other Tudor heraldic beasts that flank the Moat Bridge of Hampton Court Palace. They were erected by Henry, who was following the footsteps of his father, Henry VII, by making sure everyone knew it was his divine right to rule. One must also remember this occurred not too long after War of the Roses when the House of York and the House of Lancaster waged a bloody war to determine the succession of England’s monarchy.
A Wedding Present For Jane Seymour
This legal tender £2 (two pounds) coin was struck in a full ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver and shows the Seymour Panther with flames coming from its mouth and ears. The original statue was given to Jane Seymour as a wedding present and was meant to represent the union between a committed consort and a mighty monarch. This proved to be the case as she was Henry’s only wife to receive a queen’s funeral. She curried Henry’s favor by giving birth to his only son, the future King Edward VI. Unfortunately, Jane died of complications less than two weeks following Edward’s birth.
