The Music Legends series began in 2020 with the release of the
Queen coin (see our my other auctions for this item)
, followed by this Elton John coin. Sir Elton Hercules John was originally born as Reginald Kenneth Dwight in 1947. Although he had humble beginnings as a teenager playing piano in a pub from Thursday to Sunday nights, Elton John’s fame skyrocketed in 1970 with his first hit single “Your Song,” which topped charts in both the UK and the US. He has sold over 300 million records over the course of his career, securing him as one of the best-selling music artists of all time. His most popular songs include “Rocket Man”, “Bennie and the Jets”, “I’m Still Standing”, “Tiny Dancer”, and “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” A major champion for the LGBT movement, Elton John is a highly respected musician and philanthropist. He was close friends with Freddie Mercury of Queen, and after losing Mercury and another friend to HIV complications, he created the Elton John AIDS Foundation. He has performed at numerous royal events, and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1998 for his “services to music and charitable services.” John has also received the Legion of Honour, France’s highest civilian award in 2019.

Displays the right-facing bust of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Inscriptions: “Elizabeth II”, “D.G. REG F.D” (Queen by the Grace of God), and the denomination.
Reverse:
Features the inscription “ELTON JOHN” with the artist’s signature boater hat, bowtie, and glasses in the form of two connected sixteenth notes. The purity, weight, and year are inscribed in a band around the illustration in repeating text. The designer’s initials appear inscribed on the coin as “BMJ”.
