1994 GREAT BRITAIN (UK) 50 PENCE (Normandy Invasion) - 30mm Original Variety
SELLER'S NOTE'S:
A design representing the Allied invasion force heading for Normandy and filling the sea and sky, together with the value "50 PENCE". this was the last commemorative coin in the original (larger) size, demonetized in 1998.
The coin is one of five 50 pence coins released by the Royal Mint in their Military History set; it's mintage is 6.7 million, the others being the
2005 Victoria Cross Medal 50p
(12 million mintage), the
2006 Victoria Cross Soldier
50p (10 million mintage), the
2016 Battle of Hastings
50p (6.7 million mintage) and the
2015 Battle of Britain
50p (5.9 million).
The original cupronickel “D-Day” coin is 2.5mm thick and has a diameter of 30mm, as it was produced prior to 1997, meaning it was the last commemorative 50 pence coin to have those dimensions, the dimensions of the 50 pence coin were changed to 1.78mm thick and 27.3mm in diameter. The 50 Pence “D-Day Anniversary” coin is the only coin of the series to have the original dimensions of the old 50 Pence coins.
As the D-Day 50p was introduced prior to 1997, it is classed as an old-style 50p with a larger diameter and weight. This also means that it is no longer legal tender, as these older 50p coins were discontinued in 1998 making the D-Day 50p the last circulated commemorative 50p to be produced in this style. The only reverse design of the regular Military History Set that comes in the larger size (30mm) 50 pence coin dimensions was of the 1994 Allied Invasion Force in recognition of D-Day. The rest of the 5 coin Military History set is done in the new dimensions of the 50 p (1.78mm thick and 27.3mm in diameter).
These coins offered for sale are the
original
1994 circulated “D-Day” coins with the 3
rd
portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. They were originally set for circulation, and they show signs of circulation, obviously. Uniquely, these coins were demonetized in 1998, allowing for only 3 1/2 years of circulation, so they are in rather good shape for a circulated coin. They exhibit contact marks, minor scratches, they have the general signs of a circulated coin. The coins I have are in relatively, AU-EF condition, they remind me of being a little worse off than the West Point coins from the American Coin Hunt. Most of those are graded in mid MS quality, these UK coins would probably be a little lower on the scale, since they (assumably) spent more time in circulation. They are, in my subjective opinion, Almost Uncirculated on the Sheldon Scale. Maybe Extremely Fine. You be the judge by examining the photos I provided.
