Description
Up for auction is a Silver Jubilee coin markingthe 25th anniversary of Queen ElizabethII's accession to the throne of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries.
The “Silver Jubilee” coin is often confused with a silver coin. In fact, two coins were minted; one was made of cupro-nickle and the other silver proof. It’s difficult to tell the difference as both weigh the same and are of the same diameter. The only difference is the silver proof coin is 2.89 mm thick and the cupro-nickle is 3.2 mm thick. Also, the
silver proof coin would have been sold in a presentation box.
I measured the thickness of the coin and I could not tell if it’s silver or cupro-nickle. However, the coin is not in a presentation box. I inherited the coin from my uncle, who was a preservationist, and he would have kept the coin if the original box if it had been silver proof.
I am concluding the coin is not made of silver. However, the coin is in excellent condition with its original luster. Please see the photos for exact conditions. Also, the coin looks better in person than my crummy photography skills.
I have priced this vintage item at a low price, so I can clean out my closets…one item at a time
